I've seen a couple of shocking things in the last couple of weeks. I usually try to keep it pretty upbeat here, but I feel like venting, so I will.
Last week I was working on some business ideas at Panera Bread and there were a couple of ladies with 3 little sweet boys, having some breakfast. One of the boys (who I learned afterward was only 8 months old), kept shrieking. Not crying, but just a happy little squeel to say, 'hey, I'm here too...don't forget me!' I thought it was cute...maybe because I'm a mother of three, who at one point had a baby who did this anytime we sat down at a restaurant to eat.
This older man stood up, looked at the baby, and told him to 'SHUT UP,' then grabbed his belongings and moved to the other side of the restaurant. Can you believe the nerve of some people!?! I can't understand what would give this man even the idea that it's okay to talk to a baby this way. I, of course went over the sweet baby and mother and tried to make a joke to try and calm her nerves...poor thing.
Then today...right now, actually...I'm at Starbucks taking an online photoshop class (and now blogging ;) and this young lady with her mother coughed a few times. An older lady who just came and sat down, turned around and spoke to me. I took my headphones off to prompt her to repeat what she said and she asked if I was sick. I said, 'Uum, I don't think so,' with a smile. Then she turns to the young girl behind me and asked her if she was sick. The mother said she just went to the doctor, and she is fine...just a cough, not contagious. The lady then proceeded to raise her voice at the girl, telling her that she should not be in public if she was sick. 'Why don't you stay home,' she said, 'I just had surgery and I can get sick really easy!'
Rediculous!! I'm thinking, if you just had surgery, maybe you should stay home, if you are that concerned with catching something. I'm not saying if you're sick, you should go tramping around town spreading germs, but sheesh people...come on!!
Moral to the story...keep your rude thoughts to yourself! I'm all for speaking up when necessary, or when a child's life is in danger, etc. But, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Apparently some people's mothers didn't teach them that ;)
Oh, and if you are rude...in public...and I catch you...I will blog about you...
p.s. no one was harmed in the making of this blog post, except those who were the victims of rude people ;) Love...truly love...even if it's just a smile. I smiled at this lady as she left...hoping to brighten her grumpy day. Hope it worked!
Jamie :)

You're so right! I really don't get why people feel it's OK to be ignorant and rude to each other, especially when it's completely uncalled for, as it seemed to be in both cases you witnessed. Sometimes I lose control of my mouth when I see this type of thing happening, and I can't help but speak up. It's going to get me in trouble one of these days!

This behavior is becoming more and more common. I always try to smile too, but sometimes I want to scream at people!

Wow! It really perplexes me how mean some people can be. I get it that there are a lot of unhappy people out there...but just wow. I am not blissful every moment of everyday either but I pray that I never get to the point where I can say something mean to someone like that and not be bothered by my own behavior. Where's the compassion?
